A tech pack defines the intended garment, a pattern defines the shapes used to cut it, and a sample shows how one version of the design behaves when materials and construction come together. None of the three should silently replace the others. For a controlled production handoff, identify the approved revision of each record and write down any changes made during sampling.

Think of them as specification, construction geometry and physical evidence. The useful production reference is the connection between them.
What a sportswear tech pack controls
A tech pack should make the intended product reviewable. The exact depth depends on the garment, but common sections include:
- Style name, product code and revision.
- Front, back and detail drawings.
- Base size, points of measure and measurement method.
- Size range, grading direction and stated tolerances where approved.
- Material and trim list, including unresolved substitutions.
- Seam, panel, pocket, waistband and closure construction.
- Artwork dimensions, placement and color references.
- Player names, numbers or variable-data rules where relevant.
- Main label, care label, hangtag and packaging instructions.
- Sample comments, decision owner and approval status.
The tech pack should distinguish confirmed specifications from requests for factory development. If a fabric, stitch or tolerance has not been approved, mark it as open rather than presenting it as fact.
What the pattern controls
The pattern translates a fit and design into cuttable shapes. It controls the geometry of panels and how they join. Pattern work is especially important when the design uses a new fit, curved panels, compression, a contoured waistband, unusual armholes, reversible construction or other details that cannot be defined by a logo mockup.
A buyer may provide an existing validated pattern, ask a technical designer to develop one or ask the selected manufacturer whether pattern development is available for the project. The correct route depends on ownership, file compatibility, product complexity and the supplier's confirmed scope.
Do not assume that sending a pattern transfers every requirement. The manufacturer still needs the approved material, construction, branding, measurement, packaging and revision records.
What the sample controls
A representative sample lets the buyer review the combined result. Depending on the project, that review may cover:
- Overall silhouette and intended fit.
- Key garment measurements using the agreed method.
- Fabric hand feel, weight, stretch and recovery direction.
- Seam comfort, panel alignment and range of movement.
- Artwork scale, position and readability.
- Neckline, waistband, pocket, trim and closure behavior.
- Label location and packaging assumptions.
A sample is most useful when it has an identity: style, size, color, material reference, tech-pack revision and review date. “Approved sample” should not mean an unlabeled garment remembered differently by each person.
The controlled sequence from idea to production
- Define the product brief. Record the user, intended function, quantity, size scope, artwork, destination and schedule.
- Prepare the current specification. Create or refine the tech pack; clearly mark open decisions.
- Confirm the pattern-development route. Identify who creates or adjusts the pattern and which fit reference is being used.
- Make the agreed sample. Tie it to the current file revisions and selected materials.
- Review with written comments. Comment by location and requirement; avoid vague directions such as “make it better.”
- Update the records. A change approved on the garment must also be reflected in the applicable tech-pack or pattern revision.
- Confirm the production reference. Name the approved files, sample, size scope, artwork, roster and packing instructions.
If a revised sample is not required, both parties should still record which written change replaces the earlier physical reference.
Fit sample, size set and pre-production sample are not identical decisions
Sampling terms vary by supplier and product, so define the purpose instead of relying on the label.
A fit sample focuses on silhouette, measurements and wear. A size set checks how the approved base develops across selected sizes. A pre-production sample is intended to represent the approved production configuration as closely as the confirmed materials and process allow.
One garment may serve more than one purpose, but the review checklist must state which questions it answers. A good base-size sample does not automatically approve every graded size. Standardized body-measurement definitions do not determine how measurements relate to a garment specification; the buyer and manufacturer must still agree the measurement method and intended fit.
When should a buyer provide an existing pattern?
An existing pattern can be useful when the buyer owns a validated fit, is transferring a repeat style or needs continuity with a previous product. Before sending it, confirm:
- File format, units, scale and included seam allowance.
- Style, base size and revision identity.
- Whether grading is included and which sizes it covers.
- Ownership and permission to use the file.
- Which measurements and physical sample validate it.
- Whether the receiving manufacturer expects to adapt it to the approved material or construction.
Never send third-party patterns or artwork without permission. If the design is only a visual reference, label it as a reference and request original development.
Version control prevents invisible changes
Use a simple revision system across documents:

Do not overwrite approved files. Keep the earlier version, issue a new revision and summarize what changed. This matters when a comment changes several downstream records—for example, moving a side panel can affect the pattern, measurement chart and artwork placement.
Production handoff checklist
- Product, colorways and quantity are confirmed.
- The approved tech-pack revision is named.
- The approved pattern revision or development responsibility is named.
- The sample identity and review status are recorded.
- Measurement method, base size and size scope are clear.
- Materials and allowed substitutions are confirmed.
- Artwork, names, numbers and placements use approved versions.
- Labels and packaging instructions are included.
- Open issues are resolved or explicitly excluded.
- Buyer and supplier reference the same handoff record.
Frequently asked questions
Is a tech pack the same as a sewing pattern?
No. The tech pack states the product requirements; the pattern provides the shapes used to cut and assemble the garment. They overlap around fit and measurements but perform different jobs.
Can a mockup replace a physical sample?
No. A mockup is useful for visual direction and artwork approval, but it cannot show physical fit, material behavior or construction. Confirm the appropriate sample path for the project.
Does one approved sample approve every size?
Not automatically. The approved base and the size/grading scope must be stated. Projects with mixed youth/adult fits or a broad size range may need additional size review.
Which record should change after sample comments?
Update every record affected by the decision. A fit change may require tech-pack and pattern revisions; an artwork change may require both the artwork file and tech-pack placement page to change.
